The Protest Against Suppression of PA govt

JVP-PROTEST

Today, on 25th of May 2000, People’s Liberation Front (JVP), Nawa Sama Samaja Party and Muslim United Liberation Front held a massive protest demonstration against the suppressive situation imposed by declaring an “emergency war situation” in Sri Lanka. People’s Alliance Govt. last 8th declared this emergency situation using certain articles of “Public Security Act”.

JVP-PROTESTThis was the first protest launched against the proscription of mettings, protests and other public events. Thousands of supporters led by the leaders of JVP, NSSP, and MULF shouted slogans against the suppression in the guise of solving the war situation. The security was tightened before the protest in Lipton Rounabout where the party supporters were gathered. Police were instructed to disperse the crowd which they failed. The protesters were tactful enough to start the protest from a place that the security officers did not expect it to happen. The police batton charge squad was called and the higher police officers informed the protesters to disperse within 5 minutes or otherwise they will be dispersed by force. The JVP leaders who were leading the protest argued that the protest is not a threat to keep peace and order.

JVP-ProtestThe people’s right to protest against suppression is proscribed by the govt. declaration of emergency war situation. The protesters did not hesitate to use there chance to read slogans against prevailing suppressive situation. Then a water cannon shooter vehicle was called by the Police. The water-tear gas charge was not strong enough to disperse the demonstration. They continued with more courage. About 50 policcemen were ready with there battons, teargas guns and masks. After about 20 minutes the crowd were forced to disperse by the police teargas charge. Later the media were addressed by the representatives of the protest. Most of the protesters did not disperse until they were sure the protest cannot be continued. The police squad was seen waiting even about half an hour after the protesters were dispersed.
